Amenstic disorder
Subacute organic psychiatric syndrome characterized by prominent impairment in ability to learn new information & unable to recall learned information, without absence of generalized intellectual impairment.

Lesions:
Posterior hypothalamus
Bilateral hippocampal lesions
Degenerative changes of mammillary bodies
Haemorrhagic lesions around 3rd & 4th ventricles

Etiology: Dietary deficiency of  Vit—B1
                      Alcohol abuse
                      gastric carcinoma
                       Persistent puerperal sepsis, vomiting, typhoid fever
Other causes---> vascular lesion in CNS
                            CO poisoning
                             Head injury
                              Surgery in  CNS

Clinical features:
1.      Korsakov’s syndrome → a Chronic syndrome . Following S/S are—
       Memory deficit( recent), Confabulation ( fabrication of  memory), irritability, peripheral neuropathy.
2.      Wernicke’s encephalopathy ---> acute condition. Following S/S are---
         Impaired consciousness, memory deficit( recent), disorientation of  time, ophthalmoplegia and  nystegmus
                                                        


Treatment: Stop alcohol in case of  alcoholic patients.
                           Injection B1 daily
Vitamin B complex orally
Diet rich in Vit-B complex.
